With beauty counters stacked with the latest high tech skin ingredients, the humble rose is often overlooked conjuring up thoughts of your grandma’s old perfume. But not any more. In case you haven’t noticed there’s a huge rose renaissance happening and in the beauty world, it is now the ‘it’ ingredient and included in everything from anti ageing serums to lip balms

Since ancient times, this vitamin C-packed plant has been used for its antibacterial and antiseptic characteristics, as well as for cell regeneration, hydration and skin healing. The 17th-century English physician Culpeper wrote that red roses strengthen the hear while Cleopatra is said to have bathed in petal-infused milk and soaked the sails of her ship in rose water.

So why the resurgence? Partly because of the growing trend for natural ingredients, but   also because there’s a new understanding of the flower’s powers and the development of technologies that can bolster its many skincare benefits.

The majority of beauty products that incorporate rose don’t contain the actual flower, but rather a blend of  rose essential oil, rose water or rose hip oil

Rose oil is extracted from the petals and is a great ally in the fight against wrinkles, puffiness, thinning skin and sensitivity. It is particularly good for thread veins or rosacea as it helps strengthen and calm the skin and take away redness. It also has relaxing anti-depressant benefits so the ideal oil to choose when you’re stressed out. In its purest form it’s also known as rose otto .It takes roughly 30,000 rose petals to produce a single ounce which is why it is the most costly.

*ROSE WATER – Traditionally used to soothe and tone skin rose water has been clinically proven to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties so is especially beneficial for acne prone or irritated skin and to balance skin.  It is produced through steam distillation using damask rose petals
