GET THE PERFECT DERRIERE …without doing a Gwynnie
Gwyneth Paltrow, known for her strict detoxes and workout regime, has revealed the secret behind her pert bottom. The 43 year old mother of two spends 12 hours a week with her personal trainer Tracy Anderson exercising her backside – often concentrating on just one muscle, while wearing ankle weights.
Her gruelling two-hour routine over six days a week is, she says, worth it as she now has “a bum of a 22 year old stripper” which the Hollywood actress enviably displayed last week.
Thanks to other curvy stars like the Kardashians, Jennifer Lopez and Beyoncé, curvy bottoms are big news this year and sparked one of the biggest trends in cosmetic procedures. Figures released by ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) at the weekend show that buttock lifts are now the fastest growing op with a buttock procedure on average every 30 minutes every day. In the UK, clinics and salons are responding to demand for bottom enhancing procedures with Bacials (bottom facials) peels to banish blemishes and cheek tighteners to deal with saggy skin.
The bottom, a trouble spot for most women, is comprised of skin, fat and other tissue, and it ages similarly to how the face ages. . A host of factors cause the bottom to sag including fat loss, loss of elasticity and the aging process itself. Thanks to the female hormone oestrogen all women are prone to carrying fat on their lower half but, on the plus side, it’s much healthier to have a fat bottom than tummy as storing fat around the middle increases the risk of a heart attack. Not much consolation when you want to squeeze into a pair of tight jeans but the good news is there are plenty of ways you can tone tighten and lift your behind – without doing a Gwynnie. Here’s how
*Cardio that works the legs such as running, cycling, walking and swimming (breast stroke) are all great bottom busters while strong bottom muscles will give your back and hips the support it needs during the middle years. Mix three sessions a week with three sessions of toning moves such as lunches and squats. Buttock clenches will also help firm up those muscles. What’s more, you can do this exercise literally anywhere, even standing in line at the supermarket. Simply stand with your feet hip-width apart and clench your bottom muscles, hold for a few seconds and repeat for one or two minutes. *Don’t crash diet because you will lose muscle as well as fat, which can lead to that ‘loose’ look. Aim to keep muscle tissue by eating protein every day. Follow a low GI diet – wholegrain foods that release energy slowly – and limit refined sugar to keep blood sugar stable. Include plenty of zinc rich foods such as eggs and chicken which can help prevent stretch marks
*Massage, body brushing and regular exfoliation will all help improve the appearance of the skin on your bottom, giving it a smoother, younger look. They’ll also boost circulation, bringing much-needed nutrients and oxygen to the skin. If you can bear it, a little DIY hydrotherapy with the shower hose can help keep skin-tight – simply blast your bottom with alternating hot and cold water. That’ll wake you up in the morning!
* Cheat your way to curves with bottom enhancing underwear. Booty Pop (£19.99 firebox.com) has built in silicone pads to instantly transform droopy booties. Or check out the Spanx range which have structured long line pants to lift, shape and instantly slim.
